I hope that this book makes a meaningful contribution to how to help society understand the dangers of female genital mutilation and protect the next generation of girls and women from such violence. We need to eradicate this practice that exposes children to violence, exploitation, and abuse. Female genital mutilation has a direct impact on girls’ education, health, and lives. The United Nations Children’s Fund estimates that over 200 million girls and women worldwide have been subjected to genital mutilation. The practice is widespread in Burundi, Egypt, Guinea, Indonesia, Kenya, Libya, Mali, Morocco, Niger, Nigeria, Senegal, Somalia, Sudan, Syria, Togo, Uganda, and Yemen.
The practice has persisted despite the understanding of its harmful effects. It is time for various societies to take immediate steps to end it. I’m writing this book to help you understand why FGM is dangerous and what you can do to stop it. This book is helpful for the variety of experts working towards seeing the end of female genital mutilation in the world. This includes doctors, teachers, social workers, lawyers, activists, journalists, and human rights activists.
